On January 14, Selena Gomez released her new Spanish single, "De Una Vez", and haters have slammed the singer for attempting to enter the market for Latin music.
Let's rewind.
For those who don't know, Selena is of Hispanic heritage. Recently, she has described herself as a "proud third-generation American-Mexican".
However, haters have accused her new single "De Una Vez" as Selena attempting to enter the Latin music market (a market that reached a "high of $554 million" in 2019).
Fans have rushed to Selena's defence, pointing out that Selena has consistently and proudly spoken out about her heritage over the years.
They also added that other singers have produced Spanish songs despite their lack of heritage.
Check out their tweets below:
I "Selena has always shown pride in her Latin origin, she has never hidden her roots. She and her family have always suffered from xenophobia, so if you are not Latin, keep quiet and don't talk about it."
I "Everyday they say Selena needs to “go back to Mexico”, call her slurs & calling her “seltaco” but now she’s appropriating her own culture by making music in Spanish? The audacity to police her over her own culture but your non Mexican fav can profit off her culture and it’s okay?"
I "y’all mad at selena gomez but stanning people who have not a lick of latin blood in them but have released spanish music.....please make it make it sense."
When did Selena Gomez speak out about her Hispanic heritage?
One of the earlier examples is back in 2007 when Selena starred as Alex in Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place. The young star had said the following:
I “I’m glad that Disney’s finally having a Latin show. We’re the first Latin show that Disney’s ever had so I’m honored and blessed to be a part of that.”
One year later, Selena also added:
I "My Dad is Mexican and my mom is Italian so I'm half Mexican which is a big part of my life. Which is why I was named after the singer Selena, so I think that’s awesome”.
Then in 2010, when Selena appeared on the cover of Latina, she said that it made her feel "very Mexican in a good way".
I "When I got the news that I was going to be on the cover of Latina, I felt very Mexican in a good way."
Selena even produced a Netflix documentary series "Living Undocumented" about migrant families and US deportation. In 2017, in an interview by Music Choice, Selena explains "what she's most proud of being Mexican".
Most recently, in 2020, Selena describes herself as a "proud third-generation American-Mexican" in a message to immigrant graduates. All of these are just a few examples of the times Selena has spoken positively about her heritage.
