At this moment, fans of Stranger Things' Sadie Sink (Max) are still signing the petition for Sadie to replace Disney's The Little Mermaid Live Action's actress, Halle Bailey.
The petition created for the Disney Studios (Director) reads:
I "Princess Ariel, is of Danish origin, as its original author, cultural identity and the essence of a people can not be changed with inclusion campaigns and much less destroy classic characters already established and very well defined."
I "The literary host of Hans Christian Andersen is an immaterial wealth of Denmark and as such is respected, Disney already has Afro princesses, changing to Ariel for an Afro girl is also racism against the Danes, redheads, and Vikings."
Although the petition had been created 3 months ago, fans are still spreading the word on social media platforms for others to sign it so that the Stranger Things' star can replace Halle Bailey.
These fans argue that Sadie's red hair and fair skin would be true to the original description of the original author, Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid. To date, the petition has over 3,270 signatures.
Prior to the casting, fans had already pinpointed Sadie Sink as the perfect actress to play Disney's Ariel. Stranger Things season 3 had also just been released around that time on Netflix and was a huge success, even breaking Netflix records. Due to this, Sadie was still fresh in fans' minds.
These fans are adamant that a natural redhead should be playing the role of Ariel, so when it was announced that Halle Bailey would be taking the role, Twitter exploded. It was a mix of outrage and praise, but to those fans who had wanted an actress with red hair, they were furious.
They raised the issue of red-haired characters being replaced by actresses or actors who "didn't fit the description", calling examples from Titans' Starfire (Anna Diop), Spider-Man: Far From Home's MJ (Zendaya) and The Flash's Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale).
On the other hand, other fans argued back that there hasn't been any focus on the naturally blonde actresses being cast as redheads, but it only stirred up controversy when it was a woman of colour taking the role.
I "Another naturally blonde actress has been cast as a redhead but interestingly #NotMyAriel, #NotMyStarfire & #RedheadLivesMatter are very silent on the matter. It is almost like they dont care about redheads unless a black woman is cast."
This fan then uses Samara Weaving, who has recently been cast as Scarlett in Snake Eyes (2020) as an example.
Eli (2019) will be released on Netflix on October 18 and Stranger Things season 4 is expected to start shooting early next year in January 2020.
