High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' Olivia Rodrigo (Nini) reveals that her songs are not "always good".
For those who don't know, Olivia released her debut single "drivers license" which went on to break several records, including being the "biggest-selling debut number one in five years". At the time of writing, the song has over 131 million views in the span of 6 weeks
However, a few fans might not realise that "drivers license" is not Olivia's first song. In fact, Olivia has written several songs over the past few years, many of which is featured in her Instagram account as she sings live whilst playing a piano.
Despite the experience of writing numerous songs, Olivia admits to fans that they're "not always good".
So, what's her secret to a great song?
According to Olivia, writing good songs is a "numbers game".
I "I write all the time but it’s not always good all the time. I feel like sometimes songwriting is a numbers game. [...] I write a lot and by chance, some of it has to be good."
I "I like to take that philosophy and sometimes you just have to write the sh***y songs to get to the good ones."
Olivia also reveals that she is "obsessed and fascinated" with songwriting as it remains in people's memories for years to come. She compares it to books, where she states that someone could read it and fail to recall a single word.
I "And somebody could work on a manuscript for [...] a book or a script for [...] 20 years and they put it out and 100,000 people read it and don’t remember a word that was written."
I "But with a song, it sticks with them, which is crazy and why I’m so obsessed and fascinated with songwriting.
Olivia then highlights Taylor Swift's hit song Love Story which the singer wrote in just "20 minutes" when she was 17 years old.
I "Taylor Swift wrote 'Love Story' in like 20 minutes in her bedroom when she was 17 and it’s like the biggest song ever."
I "That’s the fun thing about music. You can write a song for 2 hours and people remember it for the rest of their lives. It’s crazy."
But ever since the pandemic hit, Olivia admits that it's been "hard" to write songs as she wasn't getting "any new experiences" due to quarantine. (For reference, Olivia tends to write about her own life experience.)
I "Sometimes writing is really hard, especially when you’re in quarantine and you’re not doing anything, not having any new experiences."
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' season 2 is currently filming. The season will centre around a Beauty and the Beast musical production.
