On January 8, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' Olivia Rodrigo speaks about the production process of her new debut single "drivers license".
Let's rewind.
For those who don't know, Olivia recently released a new original song "drivers license". Not long after, it trended on Twitter, and according to Chart Data, is "the first artist to simultaneously rank at #1 on the US iTunes and US Apple Music singles charts this year".
In a YouTube Livestream, Olivia explains about how "drivers license" came into being.
I "I was literally driving around the suburbs in my little Southern California town, listening to Gracie Abrams, crying my eyes out."
I "I do this so often. I’m literally at my wheel [doing dry heaving sobs] whenever I’m sad because I love driving. I feel like it’s a cathartic experience for me. Don’t worry, I’m really safe."
I "But sometimes I just cry and listen to Gracie Abrams or White Horse by Taylor Swift. And just cry and then I pull up to a stoplight and the person next to me is like, ‘Oh god, is that little girl okay?’ kind of alarmed."
I "And I went home and I was like, I gotta write a song. So I sat down at the piano. I kind of forced myself to write. I remember thinking ‘write for 15 minutes Olivia, and maybe something will come up."
I "And I wrote the first verse and chorus of 'drivers license' and I finished it in another session randomly."
Olivia also reveals that writing songs is a "vulnerable thing."
I "Writing songs is a very vulnerable thing. It’s kind of scary but I think that’s sort of the fun of it."
Olivia also explains that she took the newly written song to Dan, who "really loved it".
I "And I took it to Dan, and I was like, ‘Dan, I think I just wrote my best song ever.’ And he really loved it, and I loved f the production that we did on it."
I "And I think the song just perfectly captured the emotions that I was having a hard time articulating. Because that’s the best part of songwriting."
In other news, Sabrina Carpenter has released a song "Skin", which the majority of fans are believing is a response to Olivia's "drivers license".
However, a few reckons it's actually about the hate and the "death threats" she's been receiving after the release of "drivers license".
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' season 2 is currently filming. The season will centre around a Beauty and the Beast musical production.
