Olivia Rodrigo Talks Filming 'Drivers License' MV: I Had So Much Creative Control

"The best part of filming [drivers license] was how much control I had over it." Olivia Rodrigo says.

On January 8, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' Olivia Rodrigo (Nini) revealed what it was like to release a music video, and how she had so much creative control over it compared to acting.

Let's rewind.

For those who don't know, Olivia recently released her debut single "drivers license". It quickly trended on social media and went on to break several records. In just 10 days, it amassed over 44 million views.

Fast forward, and in an Instagram Live, a fan asked Olivia about the differences between acting in a TV show and producing a debut single.

Check out Olivia's response below:

"I’ve been working on sets for a very long time and acting is [...] a collaborative process. Being on a TV show is all about the script, the costumes, and there’s so many people that are involved in it."

"Being an actor is so amazing because I love [...] the collaborative process."

However, she explains that creating a music video was much more satisfying than acting because she had "so much creative say" in what she wanted to do.

"But making music videos is so cool for me because I can have so much creative say [with] what I wanted to do. I worked right with the director [...] and it just really felt like a 'me' project which I never had."

"They were like, ‘What do you want to do?’ And I was like, 'You guys are asking me?' That’s crazy. So I had more creative control over this than I have ever had in any projects that I have worked on."

She adds that she has "always been a character" in her acting projects, but with the music video, she was able to be herself.

"I’ve always been a character but this was kind of ‘my’ thing so that was really fun and I feel really grateful that I got to do it."

Fun fact: "drivers license" was shot in Utah.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' season 2 is currently filming. The season will centre around a Beauty and the Beast musical production.
