On January 1, MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) uploaded a YouTube Rewind 2020 and fans are praising the video.
Let's rewind.
For those who don't know, MrBeast announced earlier in November 2020 that he would be creating a YouTube Rewind 2020.
This comes days after Youtube announced that they would not be creating a YouTube Rewind this year, citing that "2020 has been different. And it doesn't feel right to carry on as if it weren't."
(YouTube Rewind is an annual tradition that was started in 2010 and looks at the “year’s most impactful creators, videos, and trends".)
Many fans were disappointed with YouTube's decision but looked forward to MrBeast's version.
The video was finally uploaded on 1 January 2021 onto MrBeast's YouTube Channel and is titled, "YouTube Rewind 2020, Thank God It’s Over”.
MrBeast starts the video by saying:
I “What’s up, YouTube? I think we can all agree that 2020 might be the only thing in existence worse than 2018 rewind."
I "Because of the global pandemic, thousands of creators just couldn’t make videos. It was brutal and I can’t blame YouTube for not wanting to make a Rewind."
I "But a lot of good things still did happen this year. And let’s be honest, it just wouldn’t be YouTube if we didn’t have a Rewind to make fun of. So enjoy."
Fun fact: The place where MrBeast is filmed giving the introduction appears to be the exact same place where Will Smith was filmed when he introduced YouTube Rewind 2018.
So what exactly is in MrBeast's YouTube Rewind 2020?
In the video, MrBeast explains that he had always believed that YouTubers "should get more say in Rewind", and with this in mind, he decided to call "hundreds of YouTubers".
I “I’ve always thought that YouTubers should get more say in Rewind. Which is why I called hundreds of YouTubers and asked them what they think should be in Rewind”
And thus, the categories included real-life matters such as the coronavirus, US elections (Trump vs Biden), the Black Lives Matter movement and the huge charitable donations made by several YouTubers.
Meanwhile, in the YouTube and gaming community, the Rewind looked at the resurgence of Minecraft and the popular online multiplayer game Among Us.
To name just a few who appeared in the video, are James Charles, Logan Paul, KSI, PewDiePie, Charli D'Amelio and Dixie D'Amelio, Jeffree Star, Phillip DeFranco, Dream, Jenna Marbles, HowToBasic, Mat Pat (Game Theory), TheOdd1sOut, Tana Mongeau, Pokimane, Valkyrae, Ninja and LazarBeam.
MrBeast's YouTube Rewind 2020 then shifts to a tribute to those who passed during the year, including Kobe Bryant, Alex Trebek, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Chadwick Boseman.
This transitions to YouTubers talking about the worst past of 2020, speaking about the pandemic, not being able to see friends and family, working remotely and staying inside.
At the end of the video, MrBeast gives a shoutout to PewDiePie (Felix Kjellberg), citing him as the inspiration for the Rewind.
I “I want to also give a quick shoutout to PewDiePie. My Rewind was heavily inspired by his Rewind that he did in years past, and I even used the same editors he did. Felix, I love you. Thank you so much for the inspiration.”
Fun fact: Mr Beast gave a shout out to smaller channels at the end of the video, all of which received up to 50k increased subscribers within hours of the video.
Meanwhile, how did fans react?
The video was met with overwhelming praise from fans with many believing that he had done the Rewind justice. Many also appreciated the fact that MrBeast included most of the biggest and relevant YouTubers.
I "A rewind actually about YouTubers, I think it's time to make MrBeast rewind the permanent new thing every year!"
I "He should make the Rewind Every Year tbh."
I "The fact that he literally put most of the youtubers that I know and love"
I "I dont have a lot to say except, THATS HOW YOU DO A REWIND!!!"
I "How the hell did this legendary man turn a pretty sh***y year into such a good rewind?"
The video is currently trending number 1 on YouTube.
