In “Character Conversations” with Character Media, The Umbrella Academy's Justin H. Min (Ben/Number 6) caught up with his second cousin, Ashley Park (Mindy Chen in Netflix’s Emily in Paris) in a mini-reunion.
On November 25, Justin posted about the mini-reunion on his Instagram story:
I “got to catch up with my cousin, @ashleyparklady. thanks for having us @character.media. Our parents are proud…?"
In the conversation, they talked about how they had just found out they were second cousins last year, and how they’re now in two families: the first one being blood-related, and the second one being the Netflix family.
(For context, The Umbrella Academy and Emily in Paris are both Netflix originals.)
I “So, for those who don’t know, Ashley and I, we’ve now confirmed, are second cousins.” - Justin
I “This is very fun for us. I think our parents are going to be very excited that we’re doing this together. It’s very fun that we’re kind of in two of the same families now. One, blood-related and one, Netflix related.” - Ashley
Fun Fact: Last year, when Justin first found out about the relation, he posted an Instagram story where he's hanging out with The Umbrella Academy co-star, Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison) and Ashley with the caption, "when you casually visit @emmyraver and discover you have a second cousin, @ashleyparklady. (my brother was her parents' ring boy. what.)"
Meanwhile, they also talked about how they had watched each other shows, although Justin joked that he was "disappointed" that Ashley took a little longer to watch The Umbrella Academy than it took him to watch Emily in Paris.
I “I am disappointed that it’s taken you this long, Ashley, to finish the show. I finished ‘Emily In Paris’ in two days. And it’s taken you three months to watch my show.”
Ashley then explained that it took her that long because The Umbrella Academy was “so much more intense” and that she got very “invested” especially as she loved him, Ellen Page (Vanya) and Emmy Raver-Lampman.
She continued to say that she was excited for season 3 as the cliffhanger, with Ben being in the Sparrow Academy, was “insane”.
I “I’m so excited for season 3 because your last moment is insane, not only because of your hair.”
She also added that she admired Justin for his character, Ben, as he managed to always look so "engaged" in his scenes despite none of the other characters being able to see him.
I “As another actor, I’m like, ‘He is so patient and so fully engaged in all of those scenes where you were just there and no one can see you and hear you.'”
Justin then joked that he had gotten “really good at eyebrow acting” as he has had to convey his emotions without speaking.
I “I feel like I’ve really gotten really good at eyebrow acting because a lot of times I wouldn’t be able to speak. And I just had to look at someone, you know, and had to convey like [...]
Fun Fact: Both series were renewed within a day of each other. On November 10, The Umbrella Academy was renewed for a third season, and the day after, Emily in Paris was renewed for its second.
The Umbrella Academy season 1-2 and Emily in Paris season 1 can be streamed on Netflix.
