On February 4, Jeffree Star retweeted Selena Gomez's announcement of her new "Rare Beauty" makeup line, saying that he couldn't wait to try the products. Fans, however, had mixed reactions.
Let's rewind.
Fans will know that Selena recently announced the launch of her makeup line, Rare Beauty. On the same day, Jeffree retweeted Selena's announcement and asked fans for their opinion of it.
Check out Jeffree's tweet below:
I "What does everyone think about this?? 👀 Can’t wait to try the products!!!"
Altogether, fans responses were mixed.
Firstly, quite a few fans were excited to see that Jeffree Star might be reviewing Selena's Rare Beauty makeup line, and especially curious to find out whether or not the products would be "Jeffree Star Approved". As Jeffree is an experienced makeup artist as well as having created his own makeup formulas, his reviews of other brands are often highly sought after by fans.
However, other fans were tired of celebrities attempting to enter the makeup industry. These fans pointed out that these celebrities had little to no experience in makeup, and really only had the experience of wearing it. They accused these celebrities of seeing the makeup industry as a "cash grab".
Check out their tweets below:
I "Nothing against Selena, Kesha, or Lady Gaga, but I'm kinda tired of artists making cosmetics lines. I feel like Rihanna did it first and did amazing (she still is!), but at this point in time, we don't need more makeup lines, especially from artists/celebs."
I "Too many celebrities trying to do their own beauty line now. Celebrities see how the beauty industry is a big cash grabber."
I "Tired of celebs who are unrelated to makeup launching makeup brands. Screams cash grab! Just because Rihanna and Fenty were so successful doesn’t mean other celebs will be."
However, other fans quickly rushed to defend Selena, stating that she was passionate about her "Rare Beauty" makeup line, and that she had been working on it for the past 2 years. They also pointed out that the message behind the brand was "meaningful" and that it was OK if she and other celebrities wanted to branch out of their "music career" and do something else they are interested in.
So, what exactly is Selena's Rare Beauty makeup line?
The name 'Rare' was taken from Selena's third solo studio album of the same name. Selena described the album as songs from her "heart" and that the word "rare" was much more than a title. Instead, it represented a person being themselves, being unique and being "rare".
Therefore, Selena's Rare Beauty makeup line was created for people to "look like [themselves]", instead of "everybody else". She wanted people to love themselves, and to not care about how others see them because it's about "how you see yourself".
I "It’s meant to be enjoyed; it’s very special. We are not meant to look like everybody else; we’re meant to look like ourselves.”
I "You're not defined by a photo, a like, or a comment. Rare Beauty isn't about how other people see you, it's about how you see yourself."
I "Our founder @selenagomez believes everyone is unique and rare. But today, too many people feel trapped by unrealistic expectations that are impossible to achieve. @rarebeauty is about accepting who you are – and finding the beauty in your imperfections." - Rare Beauty's Instagram post.
