On October 23, Beauty YouTuber, James Charles, tweeted out praise for TikTok and their algorithm. He says that “every single user has an equal opportunity to go viral”. However, other fans disagree.
Let's rewind.
First of all, check out James' tweets below:
I “can't believe i'm saying this but tik tok has, by far, the best algorithm of any social media platform. every single user has an equal opportunity to have their content seen & go viral, AND they haven't completely sold out to billion dollar advertisers... yet. 🧐.”
I “@instagram take notes.”
YouTuber Casey Neistat responded with a simple, “Truth”.
However, fans' responses to James' opinion were mixed.
Some fans are agreeing with James, saying how they have to put in months or years of hard work on YouTube to only gain a few subscribers. Meanwhile, on TikTok, they receive several hundreds of subscribers in just a fraction of the time.
These fans are also saying that it's impossible to get "big" on YouTube nowadays without already having an audience.
On the other hand, there are those who are slamming TikTok's algorithm, specifically in the way they filter out and shadow-ban LGBT content.
Check out these fans' tweets below:
I "They literally ban lgbt content but okay"
I "Actually no, a lot of creators get their account taken down or shadowbanned due to "Going against community's guidelines"
For those who don't know, TikTok has a moderation guideline where they attempt to provide "locally sensitive" content to users in specific geographical areas. As a result, it led to the banning of content that's pro-LGBTQ+ on TikTok, even "in countries where homosexuality has never been illegal".
And what exactly is 'shadowbanning'?
Shadowbanning is a form of banning, though it isn't as obvious to users. For example, instead of outright banning a user, TikTo still allows the user to post and see other people's posts. However, the content they post are partly, or sometimes, even completely invisible to others.
