On January 29, Beauty YouTuber James Charles reassured fans that he wasn't hacked after fans were surprised when he tweeted out his mobile number!
Let's rewind.
It all started when James appeared to randomly tweet out his mobile number and telling fans to "text" him.
Check out James' tweet below:
I "hehehehe text me 310-905-8746 😜"
Of course, fans immediately thought that James was hacked, with some commenting, "blink twice if you're hacked".
Upon texting the number, it automatically responded with a link and a message telling fans to click on it to stay updated on new videos, photos, merch, etc., and that it was James' exclusive number.
Of course, with a seemingly "unknown" link, many fans thought it was a scam. One fan tweeted out a screenshot of the message, saying that it "sounds like a sister scam".
However, it turned out that this was simply one of those "services" created for fans to keep updated with their favourite celebrities via text message.
How exactly does this service work?
Basically, the service will give a unique 10-digit phone number to the celebrity, which will be connected to a messaging app that keeps the celebrities' texts and DMs apart from fans' texts. The celebrities can share this number to fans, and fans can then text them.
Celebrities who have used this service include Ellen DeGeneres, Amy Schumer and The Jonas Brothers.
However, several fans weren't aware of the program and believed that James was hacked, especially when James' text instructed fans to click on a link.
Of course, James quickly reassured fans, saying that he wasn't hacked and that it was "real".

He then included a few screenshots of text conversations he had with lucky fans.
I Fan: Hey James. It's one of your biggest fans. Please reply ❤️ love you. Can you send me a dorky photo of you to save for my contacts?"
I James: [Dorky photo of James] I love u too
I Fan: Hey James! I wanted to see if this works? You know you're wild for this but I love it 😂
I James: Hahahaha yes babe hello 😇 😇 [Picture of James smiling and giving peace sign]
In a series of Instagram stories, James explained in more detail about the service, saying that it was the "perfect solution" to talk to his fans directly.
I "I have a very, very fun surprise for you. One of my biggest goals in 2020 was finding out more ways that I can communicate and talk to you guys directly when I am not able to give you hugs at meet and greets and stuff, and I have the perfect solution. I am giving you guys my phone number. I know it sounds crazy, but I think it's going to be so much fun."
I "310-905-8746, It is me, it goes directly to my phone, I will be able to reply back to you guys, give you one on one updates about brand new videos, [...] new products coming soon, and we get to keep in touch. So send me a text, follow the instructions that get sent back to you, and talk to you soon!"
Afterwards, James revealed that he had received more than 100,000 text messages and that he was trying his best to reply.
I "I literally have more than 100,000 messages HAHAH my phone is freaking out but i'm trying my best to reply to a bunch!!!"
James Charles finished filming for his new Beauty Competition Reality show on January 25.
