On December 11, Beauty YouTuber James Charles speaks about his old scandal with IT star, Finn Wolfhard (Richie Tozier), saying that it was "stupid".
Let's rewind.
In a YouTube video where James ranks the most "scandalous moments" throughout his career, he revisits the IT controversy. He explains that he had gone to see the first IT movie, but five minutes into it, tweeted his opinion of it.
I "Basically, this started off with me going to see the IT movie. I tweeted a few minutes into the movie that I hated the movie."
However, he was quickly called out by Finn Wolfhard (Richie Tozier) who saw the tweet and asked James why he was using his phone during the movie.
I "Finn Wolfhard, one of the actors from the movie, ended up seeing my tweet and then quote-tweeted it, and dragged me from being on my phone in the movie."
This was Finn Wolfhard's tweet:
I “Why are you on your phone in the movie theater? Rule 1.”
This led to James being "dragged" on Twitter.
I "I got dragged to literally hell and back once again on Twitter, not surprisingly. "
Now, James tells fans that he laughs when looking back at the situation because the whole thing was "so stupid".
I "I was getting into scandals all the time. Which I’m not proud of, but this is one of those scandals that even today, I still look back at and laugh because it was so stupid."
James, however, admits that having his phone out during the movie wasn't "the most polite thing" he could've done.
I "Tweeting it during the movie and having your phone out during the movie, sure. It was not the most polite thing I could have done. But I just, I didn’t like the movie."
After James received the backlash, he had pedalled back on his opinion, saying that the IT movie "wasn't that bad".
I "And I ended up backpedalling and saying it wasn’t that bad."
However, he tells fans that his original opinion hadn't changed and he still thinks the movie "sucked".
I "But I stand behind what I said. The movie sucked. I did not like it and I did not like the second one either. Sorry about it."
James clarifies that this had nothing to do with the actors themselves who he believes are "incredible and amazing".
I "That does not take away from the fact that the actors are all incredible and amazing. I’m actually friends with a few of them now, so like literally no hard feelings at all. I just personally did not enjoy a movie.
James then explains that he had learnt from the experience and understands that sharing his honest opinion was "not necessary sometimes".
I "I’ve definitely learnt my lesson about sharing my opinion about movies, or really, art. It’s just not necessary sometimes."
So, did James upload an IT inspired makeup tutorial?
During the scandal, James had several requests for an "IT makeup tutorial".
He says that while it seemed "petty" to upload the tutorial after his brush with Finn Wolfhard, he explains that he is, first and foremost, a beauty guru.
I "And a few weeks later, after a lot of requests to do it, I did a tutorial on the IT makeup look."
I "[...] The makeup look portion of this, I also think was funny too. Obviously, you know it was petty to do an IT makeup tutorial after saying that I didn’t like the movie."
I "But it is my job as a beauty guru to create makeup looks, especially during Halloween time that you guys want to see, and this Halloween look was definitely one of my favorite looks that I have ever, ever done."
