On June 15, Beauty YouTuber James Charles tweeted out to fans that he had recently found out that a fan had faked having cancer and ultimately, their death, to gain his attention.
For those who don't know, a fan account of James, under the Twitter username of "Sister_Austin", claimed that they had cancer, before ultimately tweeting their own death under the guise of their "brother".
Before their "death", the fan's tweet that James responded to is:
I "Today is unfortunately my last birthday I'll ever have which sucks I've tried my hardest to get a notice from @jamescharles"
Check out James' tweet below:
I "I just found out that one of my fan accounts faked cancer and their death...? I understand people wanting to get noticed by their idol but my mom’s a cancer survivor and lying about something so serious just does not sit right in my heart..."
James' mother, Christie Dickinson, was a cancer survivor.
How did fans react?
Altogether, fans were outraged on James' behalf. The majority of James' fans couldn't believe the extent a fan could take to attract James' attention. Fans were also sharing stories of those they knew who had cancer, and were vocally disturbed with the fan's behaviour.
Check out their tweets below:
I "My 4 year old niece is a cancer survivor(14 now)- not ONCE has she used it to get special treatment or noticed. There’s a special place in hell for them. [...]
I "I saw the account and all the posts. That hurts my heart. I just lost my grandmother to lung cancer that spread, in November. [...]
I "My grandma passed away from cancer and it took her FAST... That is not something to just lie and joke about at all. How insensitive and unstable do you have to be to go that far.. [...]"
Other fans, however, already had suspicions about the fan's alleged "cancer".
I "I had a gut feeling this person was lying but I don’t want to be insensitive in case they actually do have it."
I "i always feel suspicious with some of the ones that say that but i never wanna call anyone out in case they are telling the truth because they 100% can be"
I "I saw their tweets and I had a feeling they were faking since they were making so many tweets that they are gonna die and stuff :("
