On August 13, fans worldwide were hit with the news that Harry Styles was cast as Prince Eric in Disney's The Little Mermaid live action. Fans were over the moon. A few hours later, though, and turns out, he wasn't. And fans were mad.
A few weeks ago, #PrinceEric was trending, and Harry Styles' name was plastered all over Twitter. It looked like Harry was in talks for the role of Prince Eric.
Fast forward to today, and news exploded with the fact that Harry apparently scored the role...
Until it turned out that Harry declined the role.
Twitter was a mess. Fans were confused and on an emotional rollercoaster.
Check out some of their tweets below:
So, why did fans think Harry Styles was cast as Prince Eric?
Well, the culprit was The DisInsider, an 'Exclusive Daily Disney News'. It's a news site that is dedicated to publishing Disney's news and it released an article stating that Harry had been cast.
These were their exact wording:
I "The DisInsider has been recently informed that Styles has officially signed on to the project."
Needless to say, Twitter went into a meltdown, and fans were excitedly tweeting out the news. It even led to other official Twitters reporting on it, such as Capital FM, Regal Cinemas and Pretty Little Thing.
But it was false news. Fans found out only when The Wrap released an article stating otherwise.
The DisInsider took the mistake in stride and their founder, Skyler Shuler, tweeted this out:
While many fans were appeased and impressed that they owned up to their mistake, unfortunately, some fans weren't too pleased. It turns out that this wasn't the first time The DisInsider made a mistake.
However, these mistakes are few and far in between, and The DisInsider has released hundreds of articles in the past with many of them reliably sourced.
So, what's the correct update regarding Harry Styles and the Prince Eric role?
Well, according to Variety, Harry Styles passed on the role amicably, and Disney has already moved on to other casting choices. It's a shame because it would have been very interesting to see Harry as Prince Eric. And a lot of fans were really hoping for the same.
Either way, we're sure Disney will pick the perfect Prince Eric. And with the way things are going, we think the decision will come pretty soon.
