Finn And Noah ALMOST Kissed! "Byler" Could've Been REAL!

"My Byler dreams are crushed." An agonised fan comments.

Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp's characters, Mike and Will AKA 'Byler' was almost a thing. Fans freaked out when they found out that Noah had actually auditioned for a part opposite Finn that involved a kiss.

Yep. That's right.

Let's rewind.

When Stranger Things hit Netflix, fans immediately began shipping certain characters together. The most popular pair?

Mileven AKA Mike Wheeler (Finn) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), of course.

But wait. Uh, which pair came in a close second?

Well, none other than the pairing in question; Will Byers (Noah) and Mike Wheeler AKA Byler!

And as loyal fans will know, since Stranger Things season 1, fans delved in between the lines, and speculated that Will could be gay when his mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder) shared a fact to Hopper (David Harbour) by saying that "[His father] used to say he was "queer".

If that wasn't enough, fans freaked in Stranger Things season 3.

Why?

Because during a hold your breath argument between best friends Mike and Will, Mike literally snapped at Will: "It's not my fault you don't like girls!"

...Causing Will to become speechless.

Anyway, that basically cemented it. (Sort of).

To Byler fans, at least, as they took it as a solid receipt to say that Will must totally be gay. So even now, they hold onto the precious glimmer of hope that Byler could someday become real.

Which made it all the more shocking when it turns out that it could have definitely been a thing.

Well, at least in another show.

What?!

Okay. Here's the gist: Finn is currently starring as Young Boris in The Goldfinch (2019) movie. Innocent enough, right?

Until the The Goldfinch (2019) trailer was uploaded on YouTube, and fans went wild when they saw a scene of Young Boris (Finn) kissing Young Theo (Oakes Fegley). (Read more here).

And now it turns out that just a few years earlier, Noah had actually auditioned to play the part of Young Theo!

AKA the character Finn would've kissed!

Yep.

(And to imagine fans freaking out over Finn kissing another boy would be an understatement of the century. Now to think it could've been Noah...)

Anyway, check out Noah’s callback tape for The Goldfinch (2019) back in October 2017 here.

It was brilliant, really.

...We're pretty disappointed that he didn't bag the role.

Around this time, Finn was up for the role of Young Boris, and a few months later in January 2018, it was announced that Finn had scored the role of Young Boris.

We have to keep in mind though that during the The Goldfinch (2019) casting process, Stranger Things season 1 had already been aired and the widely awaited second season was just a few short weeks from premiering on Netflix.

So fans theorised that since they were both cast in Stranger Things together already, it didn’t make much sense to have both act on-screen opposite each other again.

You know, in case it created too much of a Stranger Things vibe.

Even if Stranger Things' fans would've loved it--

We mean, we're pretty sure The Goldfinch (2019) would have raked in all of the Stranger Things fans if they had also cast Noah. Who would be able to resist seeing Byler on the big screen?

But they did end up choosing Oakes, possibly because he does look more like Ansel Elgort, the actor who plays the adult Theodore.

Now let's end this article with this one Byler fan who perfectly summarised all of our thoughts:

I“OKAY YES SO NOAH AUDITIONED FOR THE PART OF THEO AND FINN AUDITIONED FOR THE PART OF BORIS. NOAH DIDNT GET THE PART BUT FINN DID AND NOW FINN HAS A KISSING SCENE WITH (INSERT NAME HERE) BUT IF THEY PICKED NOAH FOR THEO BYLER DREAMS WOULDVE CAME TRUE OKAY IM DONE NOW BYe”

In the meantime, Stranger Things season 1-3 is available to stream on Netflix. The Goldfinch (2019) and Ghostbusters (2020) hits US theatres September 13, 2019, and July 10, 2020, respectively. Stranger Things season 4 is expected to premiere late in 2021.
