On January 1, Dixie D'Amelio announced the first winner to her "creator of the month" competition. Unfortunately, fans are disappointed with her decision.
Let's rewind.
For those who don't know, Dixie announced a 'competition' where fans could enter by using the hashtag #pickedbydixie (was previously #dixpicks before it was flagged and removed by TikTok. Read more here).
A winner would be picked each month and will receive a PR package and the opportunity to talk to Dixie and other favorite creators.
Fast forward, and the first winner is Frishta (@frishtaxx), who primarily uploads makeup and fashion TikTok videos.
Dixie also gave a shoutout to Frishta in a tweet:
I "first winner of creator of the month!! follow her!!!"
Fun fact: After Dixie's shoutout, she gained around 40,000 new followers.
How did fans react?
Unfortunately, some fans are disappointed with Dixie's pick of the winner. These fans pointed out that Frishta already had 275,000 TikTok followers and over 5.5 million likes. When the competition was first announced, many fans had thought that Dixie was going to choose a small creator, i.e., one who had less than a few thousands of followers.
I "Girl not you picking a verified creator…"
I "yeah I thought this was for small creators with followers under 10 000 or even less [...]"
Dixie quickly took to Twitter to defend her choice, saying that the "creator of the month" eligibility was not limited to small creators and that "anyone can win".
I "I see some comments of people being upset because she is verified and has 300K followers."
I "Like I said before anyone can win. There might be smaller creators in the future, and there might be bigger creators. But there are still 300 million people on the app"
I "I’m so thankful for everyone who made the videos but please don’t hate her for being picked. I worked with my team to pick, and plan on having a lot of winners. This is only the first. No need to be upset"
The winner, Frishta, also spoke up about the issue in a tweet:
I "Just wanted to clarify that i got my verification badge from musically not tiktok!!! Im not anyone special & i have been working hard for the past year to build my platform!! ❤️"
