On November 19, Ariana Grande held a mini-reunion at her Sweetener concert with her former Victorious co-stars, Matt Bennett and Elizabeth Gillies. Fans, however, quickly noticed that Victoria Justice wasn't there and started refuelling feud rumours.
Let's rewind.
The concert was part of her Sweetener Tour in Atlanta, and former Nickelodeon co-stars Elizabeth Gillies (Jade West) and Matt Bennett (Robbie Shapiro), were present. They performed past Victorious songs and even came on stage to sing 'thank u, next', the music video of which they were both cameos in.
The next day, on November 20, Victoria Justice (Tori Vega) left a comment under Ariana's Instagram post of a picture of Ariana and Matt performing on stage:
I "OMG!! This is amazing💕."
Despite the seemingly innocent comment, people quickly took notice of the interaction with many spamming under the comment, "I think we're all amazing" along with other variations of "I think we're all ..."
To those who don't know, they're referring to a Popstar! interview with the Victorious cast back in 2010. During one part of the interview, Elizabeth told fans that Ariana "literally sings everything". To this, Victoria quickly corrected, "I think we all sing".
However, the full interview does show Elizabeth and Ariana agreeing with Victoria. (The interview can be viewed here.) A fan even stated, "It wasn't shade literally everyone agreed".
The rumours of feud also stemmed from another interview from Teen.com. When the interviewer asked the question, "Who's most likely to break out into song or dance?", the majority of the Victorious cast named Ariana. On the other hand, Victoria responded by saying it was "an even tie" between all of them before adding, "I think we're all [...] always singing".
Fans thought she was trying to minimise Ariana's talent and try to bring back the focus to herself.
I "Interviewer: who do you think will be a breakout star
I Victoria: We Are All Breakout Stars."
However, it does seem to be all a misunderstanding. Many appeared to have thought that the interviewer was asking "Who's most likely to be a breakout star", rather than asking, "Who was most likely to break out dancing/singing", i.e., suddenly dance/sing in any given situation.
Unfortunately, the misunderstanding spread. To this day, it seems as though several fans are still unaware of the original clips. As one fan puts it: "9 years later and y’all are still interpreting this wrong..."
