On September 20, The Umbrella Academy's Aidan Gallagher (Number Five) answers a fan's question in a Q&A video on his official YouTube channel about his favourite scenes in season 2.

 

A fan asked:

 

 

I "Favourite Five scene from [Umbrella Academy] season 2?"

 

 

According to Aidan, his favourite scenes are the ones where Five interacts with Vanya (Ellen Page). This is because Five shows a "more vulnerable side" to Vanya, compared to when he's with his other siblings.

I "I like doing scenes with [Vanya] because it brings out a different side of Five. With the rest of his siblings, he can be quite a dominant force, but with Vanya, there's a delicate side of him, more vulnerable side."

I "Basically, Vanya brings out Five's humanity a lot more than he would usually put on display.

​

 

Aidan then added that Five has yet to "explore his humanity". But with Vanya, his humanity comes to the "forefront".

​

 

I "[...] Five hasn't explored his humanity. He's been going from one thing to another, nonstop, since he was 13. All the while experiencing trauma. So he's never had time to figure out what he wants out of life, who he even is as a person."

​

I "Whenever he has a scene with Vanya, it puts his humanity in the forefront."

 

 

On September 27, in another Q&A on his YouTube channel, Aidan talks more about the other characters who bring out a different side of Five. In this case, it's The Handler (Kate Walsh).

 

​

I "[...] I liked the [scenes] with Ellen because it brings out a different side of Five, but I guess you could say the same thing with The Handler."

​

​

I "Not that she brings out her humanity so much as he has history with her in a way that he doesn't with the rest of his siblings."

​

 

Aidan then explains that although the siblings grew up together as children, they were now "past 30" and have already "evolved" outside of the Umbrella Academy.

 

​

I "Sure, they grew up together, but now they're all past 30. They've evolved past just the Umbrella Academy and who they were as kids so they don't really know each other."

​

​

I "Season 1 and season 2 is really where they actually get to know each other and bond as family members."

 

 

As a result, Five has more of a "history" with The Handler compared to the other Umbrella Academy siblings. Aidan reveals that he and Kate tried to showcase this history in their scenes together.

 

​

I "So Five has a history with The Handler that nobody else does, and me and Kate definitely play into that when we're doing a scene. There's this sort of underlying history and understanding. It's a completely different dynamic between those two characters than Five and anyone else in the show."

​

​

The Umbrella Academy has been renewed for a third season.
